A Controls Commissioning Engineer works with other Bastian Robotics employees as well as customers and suppliers to provide detailed designs for special equipment in the material handling industry. The process involves understanding the customer's goals and objectives, and developing engineered solutions to meet these goals.  The controls engineer is responsible for multiple controls projects and will be capable of all phases of a controls project including: concept and research, sales support, estimating, component selection, network design, panel design, ACAD layout, device troubleshooting, PLC/PC control programming, HMI development, on site installation and debug, and after sales support. 

 The controls commissioning engineer helps our company meet its mission to help our customers compete in their markets by providing the best robotic material handling system solutions and technology.

  • Ensure projects are executed in the most effective manner in regards to time, cost (budget) and function.
  • Contribute to project teams, providing help outside of controls scope when required.
  • Establish beneficial relationships with our key supplier products and services.
  • Develop and implement quality improvement or cost reduction initiatives (standards).
  • Clear communication with management and the shop on issues that arise.
  • Establish beneficial relationships with our key supplier's products and services.
  • Develop new controls techniques and equipment that will help maintain Bastian Robotics as a leader in our industry.



  • Bachelors of Engineering. Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • 3+ years experience, PLC/PC control experience, panel design experience, hands on and mechanical capabilities, controls project managing experience. 
  • Extremely computer literate with MS Office products.
  • AutoCAD experience preferred.
  • Rockwell Automation Logix500/5000 and FactoryTalk View experience recommended.
  • Material Handling / Robotics Experience preferred.


General Job Description:

 Conduct full scope of controls project services as outlined in the overview above.

  • Deliver successful controls projects with regards to customer satisfaction, schedule, time, and budget.
  • Help resolve engineering issues as they arise by working closely with the engineering team, vendors, and the shop.
  • Ensure Bastian Robotics meets and exceeds our customer's expectations through superior design and implementation.
  • Complete all administrative tasks/paperwork in timely manner.
  • Track time spent by project and enter into time tracking software.
  • Work with management to prioritize projects on macro level; ability to prioritize individual tasks on your own.
  • Develop recommended spare parts lists for the equipment manual once project is completed.
  • Work with management to develop process standards within the department.
  • Attend training and become certified in applicable controls technologies or programs.
  • Work with Applications Engineering to develop proposals for customers.
  • Assist Robotic and Mechanical Engineering on project design.
  • Use of AutoCAD for legacy designs and layout work/drawings.
  • Assist Lead Controls Engineer with onboarding of new controls engineers.
  • Travel up to 70% depending on project demands.
