Overview:

The Manufacturing Process Engineer will apply the principles of Lean Manufacturing to improve processes in the production of material handling equipment. Expertise in the tools of continuous improvement will be required to promote flow and pull in a highly vertically integrated factory. Processes include sheet metal forming, punch, press brake, roll, weld, powder coating, assembly, and test. This is a hands-on position that is responsible for maximizing daily production. This position plays an integral part in plant operations, special projects, and has responsibility developing and maintaining processes and for developing and achieving budgetary and production targets.

Superior Performance Objectives:

  • Ability to provide technical leadership, starting in early product development phases to identify manual and automated equipment needed to support manufacturing and conveyor assembly, as well as packaging.
  • Support the sales team by evaluating the best method and materials for manufacturing sample products in order to generate accurate quotes
  • Ability to design and document all aspects of manufacturing parts, including CNC programming, die layouts, making fixtures, and ordering tooling
  • Experience managing, tracking, and coordinating all aspects of multi-tooling, equipment, dies, fixtures and CAD programs from concept to production, including the development of future products and processes
  • Ability to profile methodologies and capabilities of equipment manufacturers to support new line development and ongoing operations. 
  • Experience Introducing new process technologies to maximize capital utilization and minimize time. 
  • Experience assessing, understand, and develop equipment vendor capabilities and ability to write equipment specification documents for plant wide standardization of components.
  • Ability to generate and standardize process development systems, capabilities, and tools in partnership with our engineering experts (Chief Technical Engineer/ Engineering Managers)
  • Experience in identification of key process risks and performing assessments and reviews.
  • Champion statistical thinking in experimental design and use of engineering first principles in process/ equipment designs.
  • Experience with implementing standards and best practices for process and future manufacturing engineers

Qualifications:

  • Manufacturing, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering Bachelors or Associates Degree required
  • Expert in Microsoft Office products; prefer SolidWorks (or other AutoCAD program experience) and MS Project experience preferred
  • Ability to work in AX or other MRP system that exist or will be implemented at Bastian Automation
  • Working knowledge of ISO quality program or similar; strong attention to detail in regards to quality
  • Previous conveying experience desired
  • Relevant fabrication manufacturing experience preferred in custom and standard manufacturing – sheet metal, machining, welding, painting, assembly
  • General welding skills
  • General knowledge of fluid power systems (pneumatics, hydraulics) as well as electrical wiring, mechanical assembly, painting, welding and saw/fab
  • Well versed in lean manufacturing principles and application
  • Able to lead root cause analysis investigations

General Duties:

  • Provide value to our customers by using Lean tools and concepts to identify and eliminate waste in all forms (scrap/rework, transportation, motion, waiting, inventory, over production, over processing, and under-utilization of people). Uses systemic thinking by seeing processes from end to end and works to challenge the status quo to eliminate the root cause of problems.
  • Is involved in individual and/or team activities that involve using Lean tools and concepts to improve the flow of information and material
  • Organize, implement and maintain production process flow
  • Develop work instructions, workmanship standards and process documents, and ensure they are followed
  • Reduce setup time (SMED)
  • Determine effective shop floor layout
  • Evaluate and select equipment
  • Facilitate and lead kaizen events
  • Design jigs and fixtures as required
  • Investigate operational problems affecting production and reporting/recommending solutions.
  • Manage manufacturing documentation required for product manufacturing. (i.e. revise drawing, BOM, accurate work instructions)
  • Provide manufacturing data. (i.e. production control charts, reliability, process capability to improve the process and monitor and measure progress to target.
  • Organize meetings with other team members to facilitate process improvement
  • Identify ways to reduce production costs through recommendations. (i.e. equipment justification to improve performance)
  • Train staff on new manufacturing processes and technology
  • Develop solid models and detailed prints using the latest version of CAD software.
  • Support operations with problem solving, troubleshooting and technical issues.
  • Work within the framework and always abide by our internal quality management system as well the requirements of OSHA safety policies and procedures.
  • Keep complete records and device history files for each developed product, including engineering changes
  • Helps standardize manufacturing company wide (Robotics, Mobile Robotics, future manufacturing facilities)
